The origin of the name "Ultima Thule"

Ultima Thule (lit. Utmost North) is a cave outside the town of Vadsø in Northern Norway. In the middle ages this cave was believed to be the (small) devils entrance to our world. The Vatican even sent a monk to actually count the number of devils gaining access to this world through Ultima Thule, and the number he came up with after witnessing the phenomena was staggering. Ultima Thule was without doubt the main entrance for evil.

When we started our small software development team in Hammerfest, the Northernmost Town in the World (or at least pretty north-ish:) we spent a good time searching for a striking name. After some

discussion, we settled for Ultima Thule Software. Not with anything particularly evil in mind, but it is after all a pretty striking name. After our initial problems with finding a name, the next was finding some project to code. When some of our members bought themselves Amiga 3000's, they discovered anomalies with the most used Offline-reader, Amiga ReadMail (by the author of NComm). We were heavily into BBSing at the time, and ARM was not very advanced. Leo (Eivind Nordseth) then came up with the bright idea of developing an Offline-reader with something not widely in use on the Amiga at the time: History. So the develoment on THOR started and was the first program made by Ultima Thule Software.
